Substation 11 won second place in the NoGhost/Maverick Servers Quake 3 mapping competition, hosted by AMD/ATI and Sapphire. The competition ran about six weeks long and began with close to thirty contestants.
I wanted to build a CTF map where most of the action revolved around the flag base. There are multiple points of entry into this room, and while it is not difficult to defend, it does keep you on your toes as you never really know where the flag runner may come from.
The perimeter hallways contain the most powerful weapons, promoting movement around the entire map, and the mid offers a buffer zone between the two bases, where the player can choose to snag the Red Armor, or loose the advantage of the upper floor and drop to arm himself with the Quad Damage.
I also wanted to utilize the experience I gained creating terrain in my Quake 4 maps, so I devised a theme around the idea of a flooded power station carved into an alien canyon. A good rock texture from katsbits, combined with the metal and concrete textures found in the e6 and e8 sets by evillair, were key in pulling the theme together and grounding the level in reality.
